The DARE project is pleased to confirm the participation of Project Coordinator Claudia Berchtold and Jorge Gomes (VOST Portugal) in the upcoming Workshop and 3rd Meeting of the Global Initiative on Resilience to Natural Hazards through AI Solutions, to be held in Brussels on 11–12 December 2025.

The event is co-hosted by the Telecommunication Standardization Bureau (TSB) of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the European Commission’s Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG ECHO). It will bring together policymakers, disaster management experts and AI researchers to advance knowledge and capacity in the use of artificial intelligence for disaster preparedness, response and recovery.

DARE looks forward to contributing its expertise on disaster resilience and to strengthening collaboration with the international community working at the intersection of civil protection, digital innovation and risk governance.

The DARE project recently participated in the 3rd Meeting and Workshop of the UN Global Initiative on Resilience to Natural Hazards through AI Solutions, held in Brussels on 11–12 December 2025.

DARE was represented by Project Coordinator Claudia Berchtold and Jorge Gomes (VOST Portugal). The event was co-hosted by the Telecommunication Standardization Bureau (TSB) of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the European Commission’s Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG ECHO), and brought together policymakers, disaster risk management practitioners and AI researchers from across the globe.

The workshop provided a valuable platform to discuss recent advances in the use of artificial intelligence for managing risks related to natural hazards, with a strong focus on the need for capacity building and operational uptake.

Key highlights included:

  • The presentation of a report on AI in Emergency and Crisis Management;

  • In-depth discussions on the integration of meteorological and Earth observation data, and the use of different modelling approaches for risk assessment and decision support;

  • Opportunities for cross-project exchange and collaboration with international initiatives and organisations working on AI for disaster resilience.

DARE’s participation contributed to strengthening dialogue at the interface of civil protection and digital innovation, and to reinforcing collaboration with the broader community working towards more resilient, data-driven and coordinated disaster risk management systems.
